Got Art?

Accepting enrollments for classes in painting, drawing, mixed media

My own artistic practice is informed by drawing daily and keeping my sketchbook handy wherever I go. While I enjoy recreational photography, I prefer to sketch when travelling. Sketching is a great way to learn about your environment and commit images to memory. I sketch from life and from those sketches create paintings that are representational, yet whimsical, realistic, yet somewhat abstracted. Figures are oversized, elongated; perspective may be skewed; flat design is an excuse to emphasize pattern, texture, color, and repetition. Feel free to browse my galleries to learn more about my art.

I also enjoy observing my students at work. It never ceases to amaze me how students of all ages can find creative and imaginative solutions in art.

You will find the Spring 2012 class schedule on the "Art Instruction" tab.In my art studio the focus is on teaching and learning both artistic behavior and self-expression.  This is achieved first through exploration and experimentation with materials and then by focusing on developing the ability to "see" as an artist via the medium of drawing. As we study line, form, shape, and value, we learn to appreciate the subtle relationships between forms in nature. Perceptual and sensory awareness contributes to successful composition. These are skills that can be used in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional art.

Students are encouraged to explore subject matter and artistic styles of interest to them, but a solid foundation in drawing and design is emphasized. Therefore, students are working individually and at their own pace; At the same time, being in a group setting is both stimulating and helpful to all.  We all learn from eachother in this setting.
